Introducing The Political Journal, our new project focussed on (mainly American) political news. The blog will be run by Jack (until we build a team for it) who has a passion for politics as reflected in his college major - political sciences.

The website is still in a beta stage, but it’s close enough to final to view and use. Check The Political Journal out at http://politicaljournal.tumblr.com/.

Also, we’re not actually over cake…

WE STAND WITH SANDRA FLUKE. JOIN US BY SIGNING THE PETITION

Yesterday, Rush Limbaugh unleashed a hateful tirade against 30-year-old Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke, who became a birth control activist after her friend couldn’t afford the contraception that would treat her ovarian cysts.

Rush responded by calling her a “slut” and a “prostitute.” He even demanded that Fluke post sex tapes online so he could watch.

Limbaugh has crossed the line. He isn’t just attacking Sandra Fluke—he’s attacking all women. Use the form here to let Sandra Fluke know that you are on her side.

We think this should have a few more reblogs. Please SIGN & SHARE

Signed.

Montreal soccer star regrets hiding homosexuality

A former Montreal professional soccer star is going public about having hidden his homosexuality.

David Testo, 30, played with the Montreal Impact until last month, and won the team’s MVP award in 2009.

The North Carolina native told CBC Radio-Canada this week that he is gay, and regrets not coming out earlier.

“It’s hard, like living the life of a professional athlete and being gay is incredibly hard,” said Testo.

“It’s like carrying around a secret, you know, and carrying around luggage and just never being allowed to be yourself.”

Testo’s sexual orientation wasn’t a secret to his family, friends, or even his teammates.

But he said he had battled with his decision to make his sexual orientation public for a long time, and said he was extremely sad that he didn’t feel able to thank his partner as he accepted his most valuable player award two years ago.

Testo played for the Montreal Impact between 2007 and 2011.

He joins a small group of professional athletes to come out, including former NBA centre John Amaechi, swimmer Mark Tewksbury, and tennis star Martina Navratilova. Most came out following retirement, and no male athlete from a major league has come out while still playing.

Carmen Cardona,  a disabled veteran of the US Navy, is challenging the constitutionality of federal laws defining marriage as between two members of the opposite sex. She married her partner last year, and was subsequently denied a spousal increase in her veteran’s benefits by the VA regional office in Hartford, which cited the federal government’s definition of marriage.

She is being represented in the case, which is to be filed before the Court of Appeals for Veterans’ Claims in DC, by Yale Law’s Veterans Legal Services Clinic. They will be challenging the federal definition of marriage using the 5th amendment right to due process and simultaneously challenging the constitutionality of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act. This is the first time someone has tried to challenge DOMA throught the Veterans’ Claims court. This case has a chance of heading to the Supreme Court: if Cardona loses this appeal, she can then appeal to the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

The series is a coming of age story that explores the issues teens have to face such as drug use, alcohol, relationships and homosexuality.

Introduction to a new TV series.
Homosexuality is not an issue, society’s acceptance of homosexuality is an issue. Also teens don’t have to face any of the former issues.

New Zealand Labour will allow gay couples to adopt

Although Prime Minister John Key has said the issue is not a priority, the party’s ‘rainbow’ policy document says it will modernise the law “to ensure the widest pool of suitable adults is lawfully available to provide care to children in need”.

Although most New Zealanders can adopt, gay couples cannot.

Other promises include measures to crack down on homophobic bullying in schools and updates for relationship and relationship property laws.

This week, it was claimed that two Labour MPs had called gay National MP and Attorney General Chris Finlayson “Tinkerbell”.

Trevor Mallard and Clayton Cosgrove have been accused of homophobia.

ACT’s Wellington central candidate Stephen Whittington has accused openly gay Labour MPs Grant Robertson and Chauvel of covering up prejudice in the party.

According to GayNZ.com, Mr Chauvel said Mr Mallard had supported all pro-gay legislation and did not deserve “vilification”.

“I’d rather have a dead son than a gay son.”

My name is Eleonora Peireira, and I still can’t get those words out of my head. Spoken recently by a member of Congress in Brazil, where I live, they made me think of my son, Jose Ricardo, who was gay and killed a year ago because of who he was. Those spiteful words, defended as an appeal to Brazil’s “family values” have made me feel so angry and so alone - until now.

How can a guy have low self- esteem?
I was asked this question today by an anon, and I was so baffled by the question that I didn’t answer it, but I finally figured out how. Look at that photoset, each of those pictures had 2 things in common - the tags (“Unf” “so hot” “yum” “get in me” “perfect” etc.) and the notes, somewhere between 1k to 15k. So how can a guy have low self-esteem? Looking at these pictures and seeing the men that society calls desirable, the kind of guys that people want. Than I go and look at myself, the picture with five notes, a comment with a compliment about the shirt I’m wearing, and that’s it, or I look in the mirror and see too much fat, a skin problem, bad teeth, annoying hair, etc. And I can help but feel like “Who would want me if I look nothing like them?” and I feel like that is someone I can never be, I’ve tried - I’ve dieted, worked out, exercised, HELL, I even starved myself for about 2 weeks, nothing works. I’ve lost about 10 lbs since I got out of high school, and still I feel disgusting, because I have to sit there and look at men that are tan, toned and beautiful. A guy can feel just like a girl can, a guy can feel just as self-conscious, flawed, and undesirable as a woman can. That is how a guy can have low self-esteem, anon.

You are amazing.

Not for this post, but for existing. I understand how you feel and therefore have so much respect for you.
